We stock a carefully chosen range of Yoto Cards at Learning Bugs and we get asked about them almost every day. Which ones are actually worth buying? Which ones do children listen to once and forget about? And which ones end up being played on repeat for months?
We have put together our honest picks below, organised by age, because the right card at the wrong age is money wasted. These are the ones we genuinely recommend to the parents who shop with us.
If you are completely new to Yoto, the cards work with both the Yoto 3rd Gen Player and the Yoto Mini. Your child slots the card in themselves and controls what they listen to. No screen, no app, no asking a grown up to press play. For a lot of families that independence is the whole point.
Best Yoto Cards for toddlers and young children (ages 3 to 5)
This age group tends to want the same things on repeat so the cards that work best are the ones with enough variety to stay interesting after the tenth listen.
Row Your Boat and Other Pre-School Songs is one of those cards that almost every family with a young child ends up owning. The songs are ones children already know from nursery so they feel confident singing along from the very first listen. It travels well, it works at bedtime and it is genuinely one of the most replayed cards we sell. If you are buying a first Yoto card for a child under four this is where we would start.
The Gruffalo's Child comes up again and again when parents tell us which cards their children keep coming back to. The card includes the full story, a read-along version and the song, so there is more on it than most people expect. Children who already know the book seem to enjoy hearing it differently and children who are new to it get completely absorbed. Julia Donaldson stories translate beautifully to audio and this is one of the best examples of that.
A Squash and a Squeeze is short, funny and perfectly paced for younger children who cannot yet sit through a longer story. It has the kind of ending that makes children want to hear it again straight away. A good second Julia Donaldson card after the Gruffalo's Child, or a great starting point for children who are not quite ready for longer stories.
Percy the Park Keeper Collection is the card we recommend for parents who want something gentle and unhurried. Nick Butterworth's stories have a warmth to them that makes them perfect for winding down at the end of the day. Several parents have told us their children ask for this one specifically at bedtime and that it has become part of the evening routine. That kind of feedback tells you something.
Sounds for Sleep is not a story card but it deserves a place on this list because the feedback we get about it is consistently strong. Children being able to put their own sleep sounds on gives them a sense of control at bedtime that a lot of families find makes a real difference. Parents tell us this is one of the first cards they reorder when they upgrade from a Yoto Mini to a Yoto Player.
Best Yoto Cards for ages 4 to 6
Children this age start to have proper opinions about what they want to listen to. They will tell you very clearly which card they want and they will ask for the same one twenty times before moving on to the next. The cards that work best at this age are the ones with enough content to survive that level of devotion.
The Tiger Who Came to Tea is probably the card we recommend most often when parents come to us not quite sure what to get. It is one of those rare cards where children who have never heard the story become completely absorbed from the first listen, and children who already know the book want to hear it again because it sounds different out loud. There are five Judith Kerr stories on the card so it takes a while before children have exhausted it. We have had parents come back months later and tell us their child still asks for it on long car journeys. That kind of staying power is genuinely rare.
Zog and Friends Collection packs six Julia Donaldson audiobooks onto a single card including Zog, Stick Man, The Highway Rat and Tabby McTat. That is over three hours of content for the price of one card which makes it exceptional value. Children who love one Julia Donaldson story tend to love all of them and this card gives them six in one go. It is one of the best value cards we stock.
Superworm is one that surprises parents because children tend to love it more than expected. The story includes a listening game and the Superworm song which gives children something to engage with beyond just listening passively. It is one of those cards that holds attention in a way that straightforward story recordings sometimes do not.
Funny Paddington Stories has seven Paddington Bear stories on it and almost an hour of audio in total. Children who love Paddington become completely devoted to this card. What surprises parents is how well the stories hold up on repeat listens. The humour works differently for children at different ages so children seem to get new things out of it as they grow.
Spidey and His Amazing Friends Collection is our top pick for Marvel fans at this age. The stories are fast paced and action packed and children who love the show tend to be immediately hooked. We sell a lot of these to families who want something for children who are not naturally drawn to quieter story cards. It meets them where they are.
Funnybones gets bought a lot around Halloween but we sell it year round because children find it funny rather than scary. The stories are short and punchy which works really well for children who find longer audio hard to sit with. Parents often tell us they were surprised how much their child loved it given that they had expected it to be too spooky. It almost never is.
Peter Rabbit and Other Beatrix Potter Stories is one of those cards that both children and parents enjoy. The stories are beautifully read and familiar enough that children feel comfortable with them even on a first listen. It is a particularly good choice as a gift because it feels timeless and considered in a way that licensed character cards sometimes do not.
Paw Patrol Pup Pack and Paw Patrol Mighty Pup Power are essential for Paw Patrol fans. If your child watches the show they will take to these cards immediately. They are great for independent play because children already know the characters and do not need any introduction to the world.
Best Yoto Cards for ages 5 and up
At this age children are ready for longer stories with more complex plots and bigger casts. The cards that perform best with this age group are the ones that feel genuinely immersive rather than simplified.
The Gruffalo and Friends Collection is a step up from the individual Julia Donaldson cards with six audiobooks on one card including The Gruffalo, Room on the Broom, The Snail and the Whale and more. Over two hours of stories that children aged 5 and up tend to listen to properly rather than just having on in the background. A natural next step for children who have grown up with the individual story cards.
The Famous Five Collection is brilliant for children who are starting to enjoy chapter books. The stories are long enough to feel like a proper listening experience and exciting enough to hold attention. Parents tell us this is one of the cards that genuinely replaces screen time because children get so absorbed in it. Classic Enid Blyton storytelling that has worked for generations for a reason.
Ladybird Audio Adventures Volume 1 is different from every other card on this list because it is educational in a way that does not feel like learning. Five topics including The Animal Kingdom, Deep Sea Dive, Outer Space and Dinosaurs. Over five hours of content. Children who are naturally curious tend to come back to specific sections again and again when something interests them. It is one of the cards that parents tell us they are genuinely glad they bought.
5-Minute Marvel Stories is ideal for children who want big adventure stories but in short bursts. Twelve stories featuring the Avengers, Spider-Man, Iron Man and Captain Marvel. The five minute format makes it perfect for car journeys, waiting rooms or just before bed when there is not time for a full story. It is also a good gateway card for children who are not naturally drawn to audio because the stories are short enough that there is no commitment required.
Best Yoto Cards for Disney fans
Disney Classics Volume 1 includes The Little Mermaid, Dumbo, Sleeping Beauty and more. Children who love Disney films tend to be fascinated by hearing the stories told rather than shown and this card does that beautifully. A genuinely lovely card that feels like a proper treat.
Disney Classics Volume 2 continues the collection and is typically the first thing families buy after Volume 1. Most families who buy one end up buying both. If you are buying as a gift, Volume 1 is the natural starting point.
Disney Frozen is the complete Frozen story as a junior novel audiobook and over two hours of listening. Frozen fans aged 4 and up tend to be immediately hooked. It is one of those cards that genuinely competes with screen time because children are so invested in the story that they want to keep listening.
